In these Sanskṛt recitation practice sessions, we will build on the work of the introductory session and practice recitation of metrical Sanskṛt verse, the form of the majority of Sanskṛt literature, as well as Sanskṛt mantra.
This six hour series is a rare opportunity to learn and practice Sanskṛt recitation in person with a teacher who can guide you into a personal, ongoing recitation practice. Sanskṛt means ‘well made, well done, well put together’. The grammar of Sanskṛt is incredibly versatile and robust, and can be studied for a whole lifetime. The pronunciation however can be grasped relatively quickly. Sanskṛt is phonetic, its sounds have clearly defined places of articulation, vowels are short or long and sounds light or heavy. Once we gain a familiarity with the principles of Sanskṛt recitation we can enhance our practice of Sanskṛt chanting and mantra immeasurably.
If you like singing or chanting in Sanskṛt, this is an invaluable opportunity to deepen your understanding and confidence and cultivate an ongoing practice.
If you are new to Sanskṛt chanting, you will be in the right place. James has studied and taught several languages over more than thirty years. He makes the rules of pronunciation and recitation clear and straightforward and works skilfully, patiently and generously to facilitate an effective learning environment for chanting and recitation. As his great masters did with him, he is ready to struggle with us as we learn to form new sounds and train our vocal apparatus to enunciate the clear, potent combinations of Sanskṛt and taste its rich beauty.

Yogāsana – a seat to move through life from
Āsana – like you’ve never known it
With illustration from the Devī Māhātmyam and with reference to the vast teachings distilled and encoded in the Yoga Sūtra, this weekend will empower all who come with new understandings about what yogāsana is, what it means, how we can cultivate it all life long, and how we can work with yoga principles in all types of physical practice and exploration and all aspects of life.
Programs with James are always unique and original. Drawing on his decades of teaching and inquiry, he prepares to be spontaneous and co-create with the group. Workshops on the same theme in different locations may be significantly different.
